SOCIAL MUSIC

I love listening to Miles Davis explain why he preferred the term “social music” to “jazz.” According to Miles, if you say you play jazz you immediately take a pay cut. Of course there was more to it than that for Miles: issues of race and preconceived notions to name a couple. Whatever the label, it’s a genre that can speak to different people for different reasons. It can be cerebral and centered or mercurial and manic. All at the same time.

Social Music in an Isolated World.
